Bailey hot dog stand July 10, 2008

I went to eat at a famous hot dog stand. It is in the mountains in Bailey, Colorado. I saw a mill wheel, the river and hummingbirds. As I ate my hot dog I heard a loud BUZZZZZ. That loud BUZZZZZ was a hummingbird zipping through the trees. The mill wheel actually worked. There was a small stream going down into the mill and the mill was turning and spilling water into a little pool. It was very soothing. Later we sat by the river and ate soft, creamy ice cream. Then we went to a bakery with cupcakes and cookies. We sat by the river again, the river was now rushing. Then as the sun went down and darkness came, the hot dog stand turned on its lights. They were beautiful, lighting up the sky like fireflies in a jar.

Brownies

I was making brownies one day and I heard a knock at the door. It was the mail man. He had a package from my Grandma. I opened it up and inside there was a letter from her. ‘Look what I found in an old cookbook’ it said.
I unfolded a yellow piece of paper and read:
I wanted to tell you that I invented the brownie back in 1897. I was baking a chocolate cake and my granddaughter was fooling around. She made me mess up by forgetting to put in the baking powder, and then the cake came out square and flat. Since it was not a cake we decided to call it a brownie because it was brown. I’ll never forget the look on her face when the cake came out hard. I thought it might be something people might like, so I sent in the recipe to the Sears catalog. They must have liked it because now I see lots of brownies all the time. Love, Grandma
Then I shouted, “My great-great-grandma invented brownies, how cool!” Who knew I was related to someone famous? Inside the letter was also her recipe for the brownies that she made after the first batch. I ran over to the kitchen and started making them right away. Some people might call it an accident, but I think brownies were meant to be.

Hawaii

The name Hawaii comes from the Poleeneesian word Hawa-iki which means ‘small homeland’. They discovered the island when they canoed from their homeland 2,000 miles south of Hawaii. The first European to discover the island was James Cook in 1778. In 1959 the people of Hawaii chose ‘the aloha state’ as the state’s official nickname. Aloha means welcome, goodbye and love.

If I went to Hawaii I would go to Dole plantations pineapple garden maze. Turn left, turn right, and don’t get lost. Farmers grow pineapple to eat and sell. You can tour by train or walk in the maze, it’s the biggest maze in the world. Food is Hawaii’s major product. From farms to factories this pineapple might be squeezed, chopped or cooked.

Next stop Hawaii Volcano national park. Lava glows fiery red, it’s dangerous. Steam comes out of the ground. Hawaii is made up of more than 130 islands; there are eight main islands. The islands are actually the tops of volcanoes. Lava once poured out of them all, the rock cooled and formed the island. Most of the volcanoes are not working, but some are still smoking away. The most famous volcanoes here are Kila-way-o and Mana Low-a.

Want to see ancient art? Then go to the petraglyphs on Lan-i. They were carved hundred of years ago by early Hawaiians. These markings are pictures of animals and people that tell stories. They are on 20 big rocks scattered all over the area. That would be cool to see.

To end my trip in Hawaii I would go play in the water and on the beach. The water there is so blue and the sand is white and soft. I would go to the gift shops and make new friends.

Me with my dance costume.

Dinosaurs (presentation club)

Who made dinosaurs? What happened to the dinosaurs? Were they real?

Dinosaurs lived a long time ago among people. God made them just like he made you and me and the oceans and the trees.

When the world was flooded by rain for 40 days and nights 2 of each kind of dinosaur were on the ark. Noah didn’t have to take large animals, he could take babies; most kinds of dinosaurs were small to medium. When the dinosaurs came off the ark things were hard. There were volcanoes, rain, drought, snow and storms. Also people weren’t too fond of meat-eating dinosaurs, so they killed them too.

Besides dying from natural causes and from men, the dinosaurs which were mostly reptiles faced an ice age that killed some.
We find fossils of Dinosaurs in old rock that has been exposed or when we dig in the ground. I wonder what it would have been like to see a giant T-rex face to face or see a Pteranodon (ter-an-oh-don) flying in the air, probably scary!

Are dinosaurs in the Bible? A large creature that we would call a dinosaur is listed in the Bible in the book of Job.
Job 40
15 “Look at the behemoth,
which I made along with you
16 What strength he has in his loins,
what power in the muscles of his belly!
17 His tail sways like a cedar;
Another dinosaur that breathes fire, people in the middle ages would have called it a dragon, is found in Job 41. The Leviathan
18 His snorting throws out flashes of light;
19 Firebrands stream from his mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from his nostrils
21 His breath sets coals ablaze,
and flames dart from his mouth.

So yes, dinosaurs did live with men and were created by God.

Bethany’s Magic Closet (author club)
By:
Bethany Rose Carberry
Age: 7
Once upon a time there was a girl named Bethany. When she was seven she discovered that her closet was magic. It could take her back into any time she thought about. So she stepped inside one day and thought about Rome.
Once she was in Rome she found Julius Caesar. She had learned something in school about him, and tried to warn him not to go to the Senate because he was going to be killed there. But he went anyway and said “Et tu Brute” and was killed by his friends.
Bethany went out of his house and went to the Senate and picked up an olive leaf from Caesars’ crown. She gave it to his nephew Octavian. Bethany told Octavian that Caesar was killed by his friends. Her advice to him was to be nice and not mean to the Senate like his Uncle was.
She told Octavian, whose new name was Augustus, that he could rule Rome and say “Veni, Vidi, Vici.” Bethany stepped back into the closet in Caesar’s house and came out in her messy room. Her little sister Hannah messed it up by throwing blocks all over the floor like she always does.
When Bethany went to bed she dreamed of the Ancient pyramids. The next day she went into the closet again and came out in Ancient Egypt. Bethany saw a huge pyramid sparkling in the sun. She tried to go inside but couldn’t find the door, and then she found a secret entrance.
Once Bethany was inside she saw a dark black cat leading her to a sarcophagus. Looking inside she saw a mummy. It was the mummy of Cleopatra, a beautiful Egyptian Queen who ruled Egypt after she killed her brother. Bethany remembered that Julius Caesar loved Cleopatra and helped her to be Queen. The mummy was in a gold sarcophagus covered in jewels. Once Cleopatra was gorgeous, but now she was a wrinkled, brown and ugly mummy. There were vases and jars in the room, food for the Queen, jewels, art and her mummified pet cat.
After looking around Bethany went outside to drink water from the cool Nile River. Looking at the lotus flowers and setting sun she decided it was time to go home.
When Bethany got home it was time for dinner. She told her Mom all about her visit to Rome and Egypt, but her Mom didn’t believe her. She said, “Bethany you read too many books!”
So, Bethany wrote this story for you to read, do you believe her?
The End
