Magic and the prairie

This morning we loaded our reading books into the car and drove to the Montbello library for a magic show. Mr. Strivings was funny and he reminded us of Ann Lincoln (the way he acted.) He was very showy, but he did a couple of good magic tricks and had the kids laughing.

We drove over to the Wildlife refuge and had a picnic lunch, then we checked an explorer backpack out from the visitor center and drove over to the trail head. First we walked across the bridge and then we walked around the pond trying to gather some water samples.

There are a lot of spider webs on the bridge.

The pond was very placid today.

We hiked up the prairie trail and walked toward the lake trail.

We spotted this bird of prey on a dead tree branch and got really close to him before he flew off.

Walking toward the lake we scared a raccoon in the cattails, he bounded out of the cattails and ran off in the other direction, I’ve never seen a raccoon move that fast before. Grace was the first to see the next animal, a spotted fawn. We crossed another bridge, the water here was full of algae.

Heading back on the Lake Ladora loop we spied another white tailed deer.

We hiked around the lake back to the trail head with a few stops for pictures on the way.

That was a nice hike, about 2.5 miles.
