{NBTS} Week 1 – curriculum

Not Back to School Blog Hop

Wow, is it already time for the not back to school blog hop? In guess it is. Well, this week is curriculum. We use the K12 curriculum through a virtual school here in Colorado. This year I have 8th grade, 5th grade and 1st grade.

Here are some of the lesson books that we use.

Parts of the curriculum are on-line and parts are in books.

Overall we love the K12 curriculum and use it as a structured guide to learning. Through it we cover: Math, History, Art, Science, Spelling, Language arts, Grammar, Composition, and Phonics. We do our own Music, PE, Foreign languages, field trips, character development, Bible study, Girl scouts and volunteering.

That means that while we might do the lesson on printmaking, we also do our own thing like….go to a lecture on printmaking, see an exhibit showcasing different types of printmaking and make our own prints.

Or learn about Jewish history by reading library books and visiting a local museum.

There are so many extra things that we do that aren’t related to any lesson that comes up, like Grace’s passion with cetaceans and wanting to be a marine biologist, or Bethany’s art that ended up in a local gallery or Hannah’s recent harmonica obsession. Our homeschool group keeps us well supplied with field trips, co-ops, outings, park days, and volunteer opportunities and I keep us supplied with adventures and discoveries that help foster the love of learning.

These rabbit trails we take are the highlight of our school days, after all which is more fun – reading about geology or taking a hike to see rocks and views like these?

Looks like you have a great year ahead of you!

We’re using A History of US, too. I really like the series. We’re using some History Pockets activities to supplement, too. My kids say they are too old for them, but then they really enjoy the projects! :-)

Great photos of the girls! And as always, their art is so amazing!
