Hannah was learning about the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman today. We read this book:
We followed it up with a worksheet of the Underground Railroad routes here and a big dipper sheet here. Then she watched this video about Harriet and we listened to the song Follow the Drinking Gourd off Youtube since I couldn’t find her song CD.
Grace was working on rounding numbers and then estimating the sums and differences and writing up her literature pages. Bethany was doing a physical science lab that involved physical action. We went outside and used the stopwatch to measure her running and walking 24 meters, then she graphed the measurements and found the speed for each item.
We had an acting workshop at the library, except for 2 little boys who left early and 1 little girl who was shy, we pretty much had Jess from Buntport giving us a private lesson.
Jess started with the tale of the Ides of March from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
We talked about the players: the King, the seer, the friend/traitor. We worked out our voices and went about making ourselves large and small, making our voices boom and squeak. Here Hannah is supposed to be Goldilocks (before she sees the bears), Grace and Bethany were the bears.
Bethany sat with Jess as we learned a game called ‘Mr. Know-it-all’. They had to project confidence as they each got to say one word at a time about a question that they supposedly were experts at.
The question was ‘who invented cupcakes?’ and they went back and forth weaving a tale. Then it was Grace and Bethany and then Hannah and Bethany (Hannah needed a bit of encouragement from Jess, but she made a pretty good story.) Then we switched and the girls were spelling contestants who had to spell a made up word, again they had to say only one letter at a time and they had to use cues from each other to know when the word was done. Jess had them pretend to be confident spellers with their voices and posture and then shy, nervous spellers with voice and posture projecting that for the audience. Lastly, we played director. Each girl got a chance to ‘set’ the other two up posed in a scene that Jess described. They posed as Caesar and the seer, Caesar in the crowd and Caesar about to be attacked by Brutus (or in this case Bethany… Et tu Bethany?)
After the class we went to the Common Ground potluck dinner.
We got together to meet new friends and old, have some food and play outside.
It was great, especially because the Dads got to come and meet each other and talk.
(Hmmm….why is Hunter always sneaking into the picture?)
(And why is Grace always running away?)
What a fun day!
