Stickworks!
Author: liese4
My co-op today turned out fantastic, the weather was sunny, but not too hot (and we had a few clouds thrown in there.) The artist had responded to an e-mail with some answers about his work, so I was able to share that with the kids, but the main attraction was – the Stickworks. It took Mr. Dougherty about 3 weeks to weave these branches into this form.
The kids were enthralled with going in and out of the buildings and yes, climbing up inside them (hey, he said we could touch it!)
They just look so neat, I hope when the time is up for them next year the MOA just leaves them here until they fall to pieces, they are just too cool. After the kids climbed around they came and sat down and I told them about the artist and why he uses sticks, how long it takes to complete the sculpture, what kind of branches he uses, things like that. Then we picked out sticks (I brought them), broom straw and twine and made our own sculptures. Hannah wanted to make an otter, but I think her sculpture looks like where an otter might live.
Grace made a, big surprise, whale.
Here are all the kids with their projects.
We played around some more and then went to the sprayground to cool off.
I love kids and water – look at these pics!
Finally, we had to leave – there are clothes to put up at home and dinner to make.
Off for another adventure tomorrow.
