Airshow
We went to the Boulder airport open house this morning and wow! It was great. We saw this kit plane (that’s right you build it from a kit) isn’t is cute?
Grace loved this red helicopter that was landing and taking off every few minutes.
Look at this sport plane!
Boulder CAP was there so we said ‘hi’. Joel’s glider pilot was there and we talked to him about the new slingshot for gliders which sounded…..fast. Joel can get his pilot’s license for gliders anytime now, so he’s going to start working on that. We saw the CAP plane (one of them) that does powered flights at this airport.
Boulder airport is always busy and sometimes weather prevents cadets from taking off. Joel had a glider flight here and a a powered flight the same day one time, but he was only able to take the glider because of weather. We watched the tow plane haul the gliders up in the air and an antique bi-plane kept buzzing around. Grace just had to climb into this ‘copter.
Look, this time she’s the nurse and not the patient! Here is the blackhawk helicopter that was open to sit in.
As we wandered we saw this plane take off and saw a plane with a real wooden propeller.
Here is a Navy plane (that pic is for Gramps.)
Here is the Piper bi-plane, look at all those pistons, she buzzed along merrily over our heads.
You could ride in the AT-7 Navigator for only $75 a deal compared to others.
But, we were content to just stare at the beauty of a 1942 warbird. Speaking of warbirds, here is the Grumman TBM-3 Avenger whose main job was to carry 2,000 lb torpedoes.
This is the same kind of plane that George Bush Sr. was shot down in twice. This is also the plane that was in the beginning of the movie ‘Close Encounters’, she had on different make-up, but this is the plane from that movie. How cool is that? After more wandering we said ‘hi’ to Brian from young Eagles (who said he still owes Bethany another flight since his headphones went out halfway through) and then we left – missing the MIG-17 flyover by a few minutes. It flew over right as we got in the car so I didn’t get a pic of the pink MIG (yes, pink) but, it was flown by the same guy who gave the address at Joel’s CAP dinner in Jan. (I’m missing his name right now, if I remember it, I’ll put it up here.)
Fun!

David liked the Navy plane.
He couldn’t believe Joel was the same height as James. He’ll be towering over me now.
