Art day

Though you can’t see it too well in this picture, Hannah woke up and snuck some of Bethany’s make-up. She smeared it all over her mouth (it’s eye shadow) and then took the eye stuff and put it on her nose. That’s why she looks like she’s in trouble in the picture, because she was!

Today after school we rode the train downtown (click here to see part of the ride) and went for an art walk. It’s Denver arts week until October 12th and we were searching for art magnets and window art. I guess there were so many people downtown for the Columbus parade, Rockies, Broncos and Avalanche games that we didn’t find any.

Our first stop was the hot dog man on the mall. There are many hot dog men, but ours is parked in front of Walgreens. The hot dog man is nice. When homeless people come over to get a hot dog he lets them ‘work’ at his cart to get a hot dog. They straighten up the condiments or sweep around the cart. Joel says that’s not a bad deal, can he do it (no, it’s just for those with no money.) Our guy has the best steamy buns and juicy hotdogs, plus great kraut. After eating we walked around to 17th behind the clock tower to play on the fountain blocks.

Now I am sure that they never turn the water on, because we have been here many times during the spring/summer and it was never on. But, it’s still a great place to run around. See my new hat?

James bought it for me at Cherry creek last Saturday (he thinks it’s very Schnooke-ish. That’s our nickname for each other.)

When everybody had played enough we rode the shuttle down the mall, still looking for magnet art. Then we walked to the library and saw the giant kites – it’s part of the one world one kite exhibit.

We played checkers and read some books and Bethany checked out about 15 books (I made her carry them.) Then we passed through Civic Center Park where I took this nice picture of the Capitol.

Here is a statue depicting Columbus (Grace said, “Columbus had four heads, I never knew!” No, it’s supposed to represent the four directions.)

Here is a statue/fountain (that has never worked) telling about the pioneers that came through on the Smoky hill trail.

It ended right here in Denver and started at the Missouri river.

Imagine! And I thought Smoky hill library was just named that because it sounded nice! After eating ice cream (click here to see it) at Mcd’s I decided that we were done and we rode the train back home. I’m sad that we didn’t find the magnets, but we did see some art in the form of music, sculpture and kites, and we found out that the smoky hill trail ends right near the park downtown, neat!
